Today is your twenty-first birthday, and for you, a day of decision. Your parents are awaiting your return to celebrate this milestone. But first, you must make a choice. You stand in a queue with other Bunker Born, like you, who are old enough to join one of the Three Factions. Each one awaits their turn to enter the Room of Decision. As you inch closer to the room you survey your surroundings.
[[You turn to view the formation left of the queue.]]

The room is dark. There is no seat, no place to rest, and no distractions. Three images appear on the projection wall in front of you beneath a single word, Choose.
You recognize the first instantly, the gear of the Engineers' Faction. You’re father has displayed this symbol for many years on his clothing.
The next is equally recognizable. It is a globe of the Earth as worn by the Logisticians' Faction to which your mother is a member.
The last, though recognizable, is the most mysterious. An atom surrounded by three orbital ellipses serves as the symbol of the White Coats.
You hesitate before reaching out to touch a symbol.
[[You touch the Gear of the Engineers]]
[[You touch the Globe of the Earth, Symbol of the Logisticians]]
[[You touch the Atom of the White Coats]]
The symbols fade and the torso of Alejandro Montez appears. Staring into your eyes, his raspy voice speaks, “The world you know is not an accident. It is of no random occurrence that you are here, standing before the Gear, contemplating a choice. The truth is your past, your future, and this very moment is a result of engineering.
While Engineers have great technical prowess, their true strength lies in their ability to analyze and command a myriad of data to achieve control. Society is a system and Engineers are the guardians of the boundaries that would spin that system out of control.
So, tell me, are you a guardian? Will you help keep society under control? If you would join my Engineers, simply say it? If, however, you need more time to consider, simply speak the word, return.”
[[You announce, "I want to join the Engineers"]]
[[You speak the word, "Return."]]
The symbols fade and the torso of Evelyn Kavanaugh appears.
"The food you eat, the clothes on your back, and everything else you enjoy is the result of balance, harmony, and synchronicity. The average citizen, oblivious to the comingling of resources, goes about their day ignorant of the Logistician’s work. The Logisticians' efforts are the heartbeat of our Bunker’s existence and should be the foundation upon which New Detroit is built.
How will you help to build New Detroit? Will you join us? If you wish to join the Logisticians, announce your intentions. If you are still unsure, simply speak the word, Return."
[[You announce, "I want to join the Logisticians."]]
[[You speak the word, "Return."]]The symbols fade and the full bodied image of Dr. Nicholas Bourgeois, hands folded behind his back, appears on the projection wall.
“Our Bunker is safe; its climate controlled, its resources managed, and its population capped. Yet, our destiny is to inhabit a world that is none of those things. A world that is far from safe. When humankind appears on the surface once again, no longer the dominant species, who will shepherd them into the new world?
The sole purpose of the White Coat is to serve as Detroit’s sword and shield against whatever awaits on the surface. Our study and mastery of ''INFLUENCE'' allows us to command most solid objects with a single thought. When the bunker doors open, White Coats will take the first steps outside. Will you be among them? If you would join our faction, simply say so. If your heart is wavering, simply say, “Return.”
[[Confused, you ask, "What is influence"]]
[[You announce, "I will join the White Coats."]]
[[You speak the word, "Return."]]"Excellent," Evelyn says. "As you step out the door, head pass the remaining queue to the group wearing utility uniforms. They will prepare you for what is next.
Being an Logistician is a thankless job. However, your efforts have the most dramatic impact on our lives. Welcome to the heartbeat of our world. young Logistician."
As she speaks those final words her image vanishes from the projection screen and the door behind you opens.
[[You step out the door and head to the Logisticians.]]The Gear, the Globe, and the Atom return to the projecting wall appearing under the word, Choose.
[[You touch the Gear of the Engineers]]
[[You touch the Globe of the Earth, Symbol of the Logisticians]]
[[You touch the Atom of the White Coats]]
"Very well," Alejandro says. "As you step out the door, head to the smartly dressed group wearing royal blue jackets. They are now your brothers and sisters and will welcome your with open arms.
The road ahead will not be easy but I know that your contribution will help make the difference.
Welcome, young Engineer."
His image vanishes from the projection screen and the door behind you opens.
[[You step out the door.]]
Several men and women stand in formation silent and stoic. Their pristine white coats stand out against the dark color of the bunker walls. Some wear goggles, others wear monocules, but each has some sort of vision enhancement. These men and women form the faction of White Coats.

Short royal blue jackets and black pants hug the frames of the Engineers standing together conversing. Small Computational Devices hover just above each person's shoulder. The devices are known as Engineer Antennas, or EAs for short.

Everytime a Bunker Born leaves the room, their chosen faction cheers and welcomes them into their formation. You are next to enter the Room of Decision.
[[You step inside.]] You observe a small group of men and women dressed in utility uniforms. The leader of the formation raises his hands and holographic keyboards appear at his flanks. His fingers fly across the floating keyboards with amazing speed. As soon as he stops typing, the keyboards vanish. These men and women represent the faction of Logisticians.

Bunker Born Detroit: The First Expedition
[[Introduction]]"By now you must be aware that every citizen of Bunker 313 is injected with nanites. These nanites amplify and broadcast brainwaves, unique to every thought. Nanites embedded in the materials of the bunker receive and interpret these brainwaves that command nano-servos and actuators to move. Nearly all citizens can be taught to exercise basic Influence: open doors, move a stylus, push a button, or turn a loose screw. But, there is a difference between a butterknife and a sword.
Each of the Three Factions have developed signature thought patterns that allow them to perform feats unique to their objectives. Engineers can control and connect with their Engineering Antenna giving them enhanced observation and computational abilities. The Logisticians use nanites to communicate with and adjust life systems such as water regulators, harvesters, climate systems, etc... The White Coats are trained to lift and hurl heavy objects, stand on platforms and levitate them up to a limit, and so much more. We hone this ability into a fighting sytle known as Deadly Influence.
The training is hard and grueling and very few people rise to absolute mastery. Most struggle to gain the concept and resign from the faction after only a few days.
The image of Dr. Bourgeois asks, "Have I answered your question sufficiently?"
You nod in affirmation.
"Will you join us?"
[[You announce, "I will join the White Coats."]]
[[You speak the word, "Return."]]
A century has passed since the asteroid cluster, Wormwood, devastated the Earth. As the deadly post-impact winter clears, the remnant of mankind prepares to rebuild the cities of old.
The Bunker Born, those who survived the calamity by inhabiting vast underground bunkers, are forming an expedition of talented individuals to be the first to cross into the new, old, world. Will you be among them?
Start your journey!

<audio src="http://www.kasisiharris.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Electric-Dawn_15_AM16260.wav" autoplay loop>You receive hand claps and congratulations from Engineers as you approach closer to their formation. Before you reach the group, EAs float closer to you, their mechanical eyes scanning every inch of your body before returning to their paired Engineer.
"Don't worry about them," one of the Engineers reassures you. "My name is Ryan Devlin, and I will take care of your initial arrangements. You'll be paired with your own Engineering Antenna in a matter of moments. First, drink this." He hands you a glass vial with a glowing blue liquid. "This will facilitate the pairing and allow you exclusive control of your EA."
You take the vial and drink it. The substance is tasteless and cool as it passes down your throat. You hand the empty vial back to the Engineer.
"Good, good. Stand here." He points to an area just in front of him.
[[You move into position.]]
As you stand their curious, an Engineer emerges from the rear of the formation. She places three small boxes in front of you.
Ryan says, "You must choose one box from the three. You will only be able to make this choice once for the binding is permanent. No guidance will be given to you, except all the guidance that has been given to you. Remember, this moment was designed. There is no wrong choice, only THE choice. Now, choose."
You look over the boxes, besides their color there is no visible difference between them. Yet something draws you to one, you raise your hand to point.
[[You point to the red box.]]
[[You point to the blue box.]]
[[You point to the white box.]]
Ryan opens the rex box. An EA lay inside. It is modest by comparison to the others. Red mettalic skin covers most of its surface with several circular sensors recessed into it.
"This next part will feel a little uncomfortable. I need you to lay your hand on it, the rest will come naturally."
You nod and approach the red box.
[[You place your hand on the EA in the red box.]]
Ryan opens the blue box. An EA lay inside. It is modest by comparison to the others. Blue mettalic skin covers most of its surface with several circular sensors recessed into it.
"This next part will feel a little uncomfortable. I need you to lay your hand on it, the rest will come naturally."
You nod and approach the blue box.
[[You place your hand on the EA in the blue box.]]
The group of Engineers all freeze to look at you. Even the Engineers that were welcoming others to the faction stop to marvel at your selection. EAs fly from their partners' sides to analyze the moment in its entirety.
"I knew you were different." Ryan says. "Montez said this would happen, but to see it with my own eyes..."
The EAs fly back to their partners' sides. The Engineers return to their previous actions, but not without peering over every few seconds.
Ryan opens the white box. An EA lay inside. It is modest by comparison to the others. White mettalic skin covers most of its surface with several circular sensors recessed into it.

[[You place your hand on the EA.]]
Time freezes.
You look around trying to find the slightest hint of motion.
"You are inside a moment, a perfect thought," an inhuman voice utters. "Before today, you've only been able to think at a slow speed. Together we will think, faster."
The world comes alive around you once again.
You ask, "Who are --
"Do you name your arm? Does your foot have a name? I am an extension of you. I am your second brain. I have an enhanced analytical capability that can access a myriadic memory. I can feel you struggle to understand. Let me rephrase: I am capable of gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data faster than any current technology.
I can see that you are still struggling with the concept of identity. Fine, what do you wish to call me?"

[[You think, "Third Eye."]]
[[You think, "Magnus".]]
[[You think, "Pretty Ricky".]]A surge runs through your body. Instinctively your eyes shut for a moment, a result of the sudden feeling. When they open again, you notice different color auras on the surrounding people.
"You're viewing their alignment," an inhuman voice utters. "Before today you've only been able to comprehend a person based on an interaction or a cursory understanding of their physical make-up. Together we will look deeper. Humans naturally exhibit their affinities. We will be able to use this information to our advantage or change that affinity to suit our needs."
You ask, "Who are --

"Finally!" A man in utilities shouts as you approach the cheering Logisticians. "Sorry for the outburst, but we don't get very many takers. Try as she might, Evelyn's description of our job isn't the sexiest. But it is the truth. We are the heartbeat and we're glad to have you on our team. First things first. We need to get you an interface. I'm Charlie by the way."
Another Logistician hands Charlie a vial of yellow glowing liquid. He flicks the bottom of the vial with his finger before handing it to you. "These babies will hook you right up. Take a drink."
You nod and lift the vial to your lips. The yellow liquid is bitter but bearable. You wipe your mouth and hand the empty vial back to Charlie.
"I know, I know, it tastes like crap but it gives us the ability to control our own interfaces into the bunker's life systems. Your first duty will be to enter your name within the Bunker's Access Registry. I need you to raise your hands and focus on the image of a keyboard and monitor."
You raise your hands and focus.
[[A keyboard and monitor appear.]]
(put: (prompt: "Welcome to the Logistician's Life System Access Database. Please enter your name:","Enter Name") into $PName)
"Great. Congratulations, $PName, you're officially in the Logistician Database. To get rid of your interface just put it away in your mind."
You think it away and the keyboard disappears.
"Get used to these actions. Summoning your interface quickly could mean the differennce between life and death. Now, last thing, what's your size?"
[[You say, "Small."]]
[[You say, "Medium."]]

As you enter your family berthing, you find your mother and father waiting expectantly. Your father’s Engineering Antenna floats to you and quickly analyzes you before returning back to your father’s side. At the sight of the olive drab utility uniform in your hands, your mother shouts, “I knew it! My baby’s a Logistician.”
“I’m twenty-one, mom,” you correct her.
“Certainly not the best choice, in my opinion. But a wise choice nonetheless. Congratulations.” Your father hugs you before sitting back in his favorite chair.
Your mother says, “Now let me see your interface. You remember how to summon it, don’t you?”
[[You concentrate on the image of a keyboard in front of you.]]
As you sit with your parents to enjoy your birthday meal, a loud unfamiliar voice booms.
"Ascension protocol activated. Seventy-Two hours until the bunker's seal is disengaged."
As the voice falls silent, a holographic clock appears, counting down from seventy-two hours.

You nod your head.
"Still a valid question, though," your father says.

"My fellow Engineers. By now, you have all seen the holographic clock; a symbol of an end to our subterranean confinement and a beginning to our life above ground. However, we must first identify the men and women who will lead us into this new, old, world.
The Mayor has called for the First Expedition to be formed. The Three Factions will nominate a candidate from each faction to participate.

<audio src="http://www.kasisiharris.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/136542__joelaudio__electric-zap-001.wav" autoplay>You make it to the Clearing House with time to spare. As you approach Alejandro's office door you see a familiar face, scowl and all.
"I should've known you'd be here," a female voice snarled.
[["Of course," your respond.]]
[["Thanks for the compliment," you respond.]]
"Hey, I need a small," Charlie bellows to a Logistician near a floating trunk.
The Logistician reaches in, pulls out an olive drab set of utilities, and hands them to Charlie.
"To be this size again." He pats his belly before passing you the coveralls.
"Meet me, tomorrow, at the Logistician Comand Center. We'll get you squared away in no time. Bring it in, newbie."
[[You hug Charlie and take your leave.]]"Hey, get me a medium," Charlie bellows to a Logistician near a floating trunk.
The Logistician reaches in, pulls out an olive drab set of utilities, and hands them to Charlie.
"Try these on when you get back to your berthing, if they don't fit, we'll trade it out for another. Meet me, tomorrow, at the Logistician Comand Center. We'll get you squared away in no time. Bring it in, newbie."
[[You hug Charlie and take your leave.]]"Hey, grab a large out the trunk, will you," Charlie bellows to a nearby Logistician.
The Logistician reaches in, pulls out an olive drab set of utilities, and hands them to Charlie.
He hands you the utilities and says, "Meet me, tomorrow, at the Logistician Comand Center. We'll get you squared away in no time. Bring it in, newbie.
[[You hug Charlie and take your leave.]]The light bends in front of you as a blue holographic keyboard comes into view.
“Good,” your mother says. We normally start small, a keyboard, a monitor. But, if you can focus hard enough…”
Your mother stands facing you. Three keyboards materialize: one in front and two at her flanks. Monitors float at staggered heights in front of her: a control center to herself.
“…oxygen levels, food stores, bulkhead repairing nanites, laser cutters, the life systems of the bunker are at your disposal.” She waves her hand and the holographic hardware disappears.
[[You focus a bit harder.]]
You manage to summon a second keyboard and two monitors before your concentration breaks.
“Remember, your interface is only limited by your imagination and concentration. In time, you’ll be able to interface with any—"
A loud voice echoes through the bunker, “Ascension protocol activated. Seventy-two hours until bunker seal is disengaged.
As the voice falls silent, a holographic clock appears counting down from seventy-two hours.
[[Three days?]]
[[…]]
Your mother says, “It’s really happening.”
Your father kisses your mother on the cheek. He dons the blue jacket of the Engineering faction and says, “I have to go to the Clearing House. I’m sure you and our young Logistician should be on your way to the Command Center.”
As your father walks out of the berthing door, he turns back to look at you. “Remember, no regrets, no matter what happens next, no matter what is asked of you, know that you can do it.”
Your father nods at your mother and walks out the door.
“Go put on your utilities and let’s go.”
[[You quickly get dressed and depart with your mother.]]
Another voice sounds throughout the bunker, this time it's the current Mayor, "All Factions, report to your headquarters, this is not a drill."
You father kisses your mother on the cheek. He grabs his blue jacket and says, “I have to go to the Clearing House.
“Maria! Get your tail over here,” Charlie’s voice belts across the Command Center. “We’re all taking bets on who gets to go on the first expedition out the bunker. Good chance, you’re going. Doesn’t look good for Sanchez though.” He pats the back of a smaller man standing nearby as the others laugh.
“Maria! I need you,” Evelyn Kavanaugh’s voice cut through the laughter.
The glow from holographic controls light the Logistician’s Command Center. It was buzzing and full of life even in the midst of such a life altering event. “How you doing, kid?” Charlie asked.
[[Fine, I guess.]]
[[A little nervous.]]
[[Scared.]]
<audio src="http://www.kasisiharris.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/326404__mornedelport__reception-background-chatter-amb.wav" autoplay loop>“Of course you’re fine. You come from good stock: an Engineer for a father, a Logistician for a mother. You can probably run circles around us. You probably think we’re some knuckle dragging apes.”
[[“Not at all. I’m just like all of you.”]]
"Being nervous is natural," Charlie says. "You just can't let it paralyze you. Your mother taught me that. Look, newbie, we'll be right beside you. So don't you worry about a thing."
“Everyone, bring it in.”
The Logisticians huddle around Evelyn. Your mother squeezes through the crowd and approaches your side.
“We’ve known this day would come for a while. The day the President finally got off his ass to push the button to open the door.”
The Logisticians erupt in laughter.
[[You quiet down and continue to listen.]]"Don't worry. We're all in this together. None of us have ever seen the surface in anything other than a simulation. It's new to all of us."
[[You quiet down and continue to listen.]]“Well, we’re not ashamed to say that we’re happy have you. You and little Zainub over there are the only two to join our faction in your generation.” Charlie throws his arm around your shoulder. "Guess they can't all be as smart as you two."
[[You quiet down and continue to listen.]]
“What that also means is somebody has to lead us out the doors and help us rebuild what we lost when the big rocks fell from the sky. The Mayor has called for the First Expedition. Which means we get to select one kick ass Logistician from the current generation to represent our faction as we take our first steps out the door.”
Your heartrate increases as everyone, including your mother, looks at you.
“First, I’ll have to speak with the newbies and see what their made of. Then I’ll announce our representative, tomorrow. Newbies! Meet outside my office. Zainub, you first.”
You mother places her hand on your shoulder. “No matter what happens next, I love you very much.”
[[You hug your mother and make your way to Evelyn’s office.]]
You hug your mother and make your way to Evelyn’s office.
As you approach Evelyn’s office you see Zainub exiting. She waves at you and says, “Good luck.” You watch her travel down the corridor before turning back to the office’s entrance.
Evelyn is waiting in the door way. “Come on in. Have a seat.”
[[“I’d prefer to stand if it’s all the same.”]]
[[You sit in the chair opposite Evelyn.]]
"Suit yourself." Evelyn sits down. “Crazy isn’t it? How a clock can change our world. We go from scurrying underground like bugs to living above ground were our ancestors once reigned. You think we’ll learn from their mistakes?”
[[I do.]]
[[Maybe. Maybe not. But we shouldn’t let the fear of failure paralyze us.]]
[[Life is a matter of cycles. We are doomed to repeat the past. We just need to enjoy the calms and live through the storms.]]

[[Life is a matter of cycles. We are doomed to repeat the past. We just need to enjoy the calms and live through the storms.]]
“I love your optimism. Living above ground will be new to us all. We won’t have the same controls that keep our lives in balance as we do down here. People will look for that control elsewhere. Tell me, who do you think should control the city?”
[[Its leader, of course.]]
[[Its citizens.]]
[[Its elected officials.]]
"You're quite wise for someone so young. You are right. We shouldn't be paralyzed by our fear of the unknown. However, there are some, even here in the bunker that would use that fear to their advantage. Tell me, who do you think should control the city?”
[[Its leader, of course.]]
[[Its citizens.]]
[[Its elected officials.]]"The sad reality is that you may be right in that assumption. But, just maybe, we can work together to make that acme of peace last as long as it can. Tell me, who do you think should control the city?”
[[Its leader, of course.]]
[[Its citizens.]]
[[Its elected officials.]]"I'm sure the Engineers would agree with you. Some of the greatest attrocities in the history of our species occured when a single leader exercised complete authority over a population. We must move beyond an authoritarian type of governance to something more. I had hoped you would share this vision. However, I can see your father's beliefs ring truer than your mother's in your mind. Perhaps in time you will be more aligned to Logistician thought. Very well. You are dismissed."
You try again, [[Its citizens.]]
You try again, [[Its elected officials.]]“You and I share this thought. The new Mayor will have to energize and empower the people of New Detroit. At the same time, they’ll need the expertise to ensure that the citizen’s basic needs are met: food, water, and shelter. While the Engineers focus on controlling the social structure and White Coats focusing on fighting anything they’ll potentially find out there. We focus on providing a way for the citizens to live.”
Evelyn rises from her seat. “You’re mother and father have taught you well. Would you like the chance to represent us on the First Expedition?"
[["I’d be honored."]]
[[Do you really think I could do it? Do you think I could help on the expedition?]]
"I'm sure the White Coats would agree with you. Greed, subjugation, oppression, and classicm are all fruits of having elected officials. Tons of examples of failed democratic processes can be found throughout the history of our ancestors. We have to learn from their mistakes, we have to evolve into something greater. I had hoped you would share this belief. Perhaps in time you will be more aligned to Logistician thought. Very well. You are dismissed."
You try again,
[[Its leader, of course.]]
[[Its citizens.]]
"Good. You'll first have to prove you can handle the stress of an emergency. Don't worry, there are plenty of stressful situations in the bunker on a daily basis that'll allow you to prove that." Evelyn reaches into her desk drawer and places three cards on her desk: a red card, a yellow card, and a blue card. "Choose one," Evelyn says.
[[You choose the red card.]]
[[You choose the yellow card.]]
[[You choose the blue card.]]I know that you can! I hope that you will! But YOU have to believe you can before it can happen.

Ryan places his hand on your shoulder. "One last thing."
He presents you with a folded blue jacket. On the shoulder is a raised emblem of the Gear. You reach out and take it.
"Tomorrow, meet me at the entrance of the Clearing House in Sector Two."
Out of the corner of your eye you notice another young Engineer staring at you.

The two of you stand in front of Alejandro's desk.
"Well, let us not waste any time. The Engineer's role in this first expedition will be to find and configure a power source for the nanites our citizens use on a daily basis. With it, we will be able to rebuild the new city with ease, the Logisticians will be able to establish critical life support and supply chain functions, and the White Coats will be able to defend it without the use of their vials.
Your test will be to evaluate four structures of Old Detroit. Afterwhich, you will tell me what structure would be the best suited to establish the power source. Whoever has the most sensible logic will be selected, it's that simple. Shall we begin?
You look over at your rival before answering.
[[Yes.]]

Alejandro Montez turns to you. "Impressive indeed. The Penobscot Building's antenna is the best suited to radiate power necessary to fuel our nanites and rebuild our city from the center outward. Remember this, it will be your highest priority as you embark on the First Expedition from our Bunker." He turns to your rival. "Pei Ling, while your effort was valliant, your choice was not. The Renaissance Center does bear importance to us, but this is for other reasons. You are dismissed."
Alejandro steps toward you and shakes your hand. "Now go, ready yourself. Time is short. Once you've said your goodbyes travel to meet the rest of your comapnions near the bunker's entrance."

"This is the Foundry Sector. Much of the building and crafting material used in the bunker is fabricated at this level," Charlie says. "As a Logistician, we're responsible for the manufacture and transport of the materials, as well as, the safety of the area."
You nod.
"Oh, almost forgot." Charlie reaches into his side pounch and presents an earbud. "Put this in your ear. It's how the Command Center Dispatch communicates with deployed Logisticians."
[[You place the earbud in your right ear.]] As you and Charlie descend down the elevator, you notice a distinct change in the smell that you've become used. It smells like air freshner covering something more pungent.
Charlie shakes his head, "I can never get used to the sewage level. It's an improtant level, for sure. But... yuck."

The elevator doors close and you begin your descent.
As you and Charlie descend down the elevator, you look out the window. Metal walls and pipes give way to a vast cavern of farms. In the distance, and growing closer by the second, you can see a robotic harvester floundering around, ripping up crops, and smashing equipment. It has a big number eight on its chest.
"What the... Let's tune in to see what's up."
You nod.
